Storage of Cold Water

A cistern is employed to store cold water, this is basically another word for tank. They are made of modern plastics today rather than the tank of old which was constructed from galvanised steel or even lead which is definitely not good. The use of plastic (mainly black) allows them to be light, durable and flexible which can make it easier to fit into the loft. They are able to guard against the infiltration and cultivation of bacteria that can form in these types or environments. Insulating the cistern can prevent the water freezing, but it also stops warming of the water from below. Mill Hill Plumbers can install this type of plastic unit.

Location. These cisterns are as a rule located in aloft or roof space, and are fully secured and well supported. They are not allowed to be across joists without providing a solid platform between the structure and the cistern. There is a large weight (volume of water) inside these cisterns which may cause a distortion problem. The outlets from cisterns need to be higher than the services they supply.

Inlet. The feed to this type of container is controlled with a ballcock or ball valve. This enables the cistern to be filled and shut off automatically according to the water level. Adjustment of the valve once it is fitted enables a specific maximum water level to be maintained. You can always call an expert like a local Mill Plumbers for advice.

Outlet. Close to the bottom or even under the cistern to prevent debris accumulation. Inlet/outlets need local shut off valves to isolate. Inlet is normally a plug valve. Outlet is normally a gate valve.

The Overflow. Needs to be sited at a point over the high water level but sighted below the inlet enough to the gap of air needed. This 19mm pipe runs downwards so that water can flow freely out through the outside wall it should be insulated with a mesh screen to stop dirt and or insects etc. contaminating the system.
